There were many schools in Hardee County.  School names included: Altman,

Bowling Green, Bowling Green D, Bridges, Buchanan, Castalia, Center Hill,

College Hill, Crewsville, Dean Still D,  Fish Branch, Ft Green, Gardner,

Harrison City, Holzendorf, Lake Branch, Lemon Grove, Lilly Branch,

Limestone, Limestone D, Live Oak, Maude, Oak Grove, Ona Station,

Parnell, Pine Dale/Lake Dale, Popash, Prospect, Scott, Spring Hill,

Sweetwater, Torrey, Tura, Vandolah, Wauchula, Wauchula at Crate D 

and Zolfo Springs.

There is very little information on the black schools other than what has been

found in our Teacher's Daily Registers. 

 

There were two other known schools: Pettiway Still founded in 1922; which

was located in the Popash Area  and Jones Log Camp 1924-25.

 

 

Other Schools

We know there were many other schools that were in existence. As the need

arose, schools began to spring up in neighboring  rural communities. Many

children were taught in private homes or churches.  Education became a

vital part of everyday life. 

 

 

The Union High School was founded before 1920 in the Zolfo Springs area
